I'm just wondering why the concern, ZoneLabs provides an excellent free product as well as excellent commercial products. The comments about this being an issue before, do confirm and correlate with my own personal observations about the first time around that this happened. Those aren't my comments, btw, just selected quotes from two linked grc.com newsgroup posts. To me anyway.Make of that what you will, I guess. In earlier versions of 4 they took away that option then,īut put it back in the next version after the complaints.īut since they were bought out, they've decided to To control what you want to control.ZA itself, that is. Newer versions take your option away of not being Till i hear that you can actually for real turn it off.ĭon't get me wrong, i like ZA. Point is moot, i'm back to 4.5.594.000 and well stay there The phoning home boxes, but yet it continues to phone home. I'm not saying that i can not click the boxes to This could be due to the fact that I didn't set it up correctly and might be cured by a reinstall if I could be bothered. You can turn off those things that can be turned offīut it still phones home. I'm currently using Comodo and am quite happy with it, although it does seem to have problems remembering some programs that I have already given permission to access the net. On the other hand, you could try one of the top rated firewalls mentioned here Two of the first four are free, Comodo and Online Armor.

Unfortunately, I don't know which, if any, of the 5 series are supposed to be 'bad'.
I have seen a lot of discussion about the various versions of ZA, including some that were so bad that they should be avoided altogether. I see that version 5.5.062, which dates from December 04, is compatible with 2000, XP and 2003, if you wanted to try another old version. I don't know the cause of your problem but it must be possible that that old version won't work with the NTFS file system used by XP. BTW, it's not my computer, it's my grandmother's.

I reinstalled/repaired it and everything seems to be fine now.Īny idea as to why ZoneAlarm caused all this havoc? I'm kind of worried about trying to install it again or installing another firewall. It said it was damaged and needed to be reinstalled. Once everything was loaded I noticed that AVG Antivirus Resident Shield was disabled. I exited it and removed ZoneAlarm, then rebooted. Once everything came up, the ZoneAlarm setup box came up. I then rebooted into Last known good configuration.
The desktop was black with the Safe Mode text in all corners, but nothing else would come up. I tried selecting Safe Mode but it wouldn't fully load. I selected to start Windows normally and it once again rebooted to the selection screen. Then the computer rebooted into the Safe Mode selection screen. I saw a box that indicated it was unpackaging and installing the files. The version 4.5.5.940 is supposed to be the best and perfectly safe to use.Įverything was going good until about 20 seconds after I clicked the Install button. The reason for using the older version is that I hear the newer ones are bloated, slow, and not recommended by many ZoneAlarm users. I was trying to install an older version of ZoneAlarm (4.5.5.940) on an XP.
